European Ministers call for more Blue Growth

29.06.2017
On Monday 26th June, the TTE Council, composed of EU European Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Minister, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Blue Growth, by endorsing the Valetta Declaration. The group of Ministers also called for Members States and the European Commission to remove obstacles to growth and boost investment in this area.
The Valetta Declaration encourages initiatives that “promote the circular economy within the blue economy based on clean technologies, and promote renewable energies”. It also encourages combining funding instruments to generate investment through suitable investment platforms.
Ocean Energy Europe welcomes the declaration that acknowledges the key role that ocean energy development will have in tomorrow’s economy. Ocean energy can help the EU meet its energy independence and climate goals while contributing to economic growth and job creation.
Jacopo Moccia, Policy Director at Ocean Energy Europe, commented “Ocean Energy has been developing at a steady speed over the past years, with an increasing number of devices and arrays in the water. This exciting sector will be a cornerstone of Europe’s economy in the future and it is encouraging that EU governments and Commission are putting it at the centre of their Blue Growth strategy.
OEE and the ocean energy industry are ready to continue working constructively with the Commission and national authorities to ensure an efficient and sustainable development of the sector”.
