For policymakers
Ocean Energy Europe is the most reliable and up to date source of information on the state of the ocean energy industry.
Ocean energy for energy security
Ocean energy can help meet the needs of the energy transition. It harnesses a local renewable resource and reduces fossil fuel import dependency. Its 100% made in Europe technology expands local manufacturing and creates European jobs. Flexible ocean power helps supply match demand and lowers system costs.
Dedicated policies and funding are crucial to scale up this new 100% made in Europe industry, and different stages of development require different types of support. At the pre-commercial stage, revenue support policies have already unlocked a project pipeline of over 196 MW until across 19 farms in Europe – more than anywhere else in the world. The EU is targeting 1 GW by the early 2030s, and several EU countries have set specific targets.
The first countries to support and install ocean energy will become its top beneficiaries. Ocean energy projects source up to 80% local content, creating jobs and investment at home. Just 1 GW of ocean energy could generate €272 million in annual energy bill savings in Ireland, or €230 million in Portugal. First movers are already getting both the local manufacturing benefits and the grid support benefits of ocean energy.
