Ocean Energy in Scotland

For more than a decade, Scotland has been at the very forefront of the global marine energy industry. The region is home to rich wind, wave and tidal resources. Our coastline hosts a network of established test and deployment sites, which together, offer the world’s most comprehensive route to develop marine energy technologies.

Scotland has around 10GW of tidal stream potential, and 15GW of wave resource. Add to this a history of oil and gas exploration, a legacy of transferrable skills and supporting infrastructure, and the region is proving pivotal in the worldwide marine energy sector. Recent years have seen a period of extraordinary growth and change within the sector with the tidal energy market beginning to mature and an increasing focus on technology development for the emerging wave energy sector. The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney has become the go-to test bed for many of the world’s leading wave and tidal technologies.
