EMEC FORESEA tidal energy tripod decommissioning study

29.04.2018

Collaborative decommissioning project will conduct forensic analysis of tidal energy tripod, and feedback lessons learnt for benefit of ocean energy sector.

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Ltd has contracted Orkney-based marine operations provider, Leask Marine, to remove a tripod foundation from EMEC’s Fall of Warness tidal energy test site.

The operations will feed into a collaborative FORESEA-funded project called FoDTEC (Forensic Decommissioning for Tidal Energy Converters), involving Blackfish Engineering Design Ltd, the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT), and Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology and Brunel Experimental Techniques Centre.

The FORESEA support package will focus on conducting forensic analysis to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the end-of-life condition of the tripod, which was first installed in 2009, and ascertain the long-term effect of deploying components and systems in the sea.
