The Horizon Europe call for power take-off and control systems for wave energy opens in May 2023. The call will fund two projects of €4m each. In this exclusive OEE members-only webinar, European Commission official Matthijs Soede presents the call and answer questions from the sector.
The OEE briefing of 22 November identified 2 outstanding points of uncertainty for the ocean energy sector in the Innovation Fund ‘Pilot Window’:
- Are projects eligible if they operate for 15-20 years and generate revenues from power production to cover some of their costs?
- Can an Innovation Fund grant be combined with a Horizon Europe grant?
The second Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) call for projects in the 2021-2027 period is now open until Thursday 9 February 2023.
Over the lifetime of the Programme (2021-2027), €287m will be allocated to projects. There is no ceiling for the budget that can be used for this second call.
This document lists the main calls relevant for ocean energy in the European Commission’s Horizon Europe Work Programme for 2023-2024. It dedicates €94m to ocean energy – a result of OEE’s active engagement with EU and national policymakers, as well as the strong support from OEE members who helped influence the national Horizon Europe representatives. The document also includes general calls that can be suitable for ocean energy projects.
Horizon Europe has 5 ‘missions’ that will channel funding towards specific objectives. One of the Missions, Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030, offers opportunities for ocean energy.
The Work Programme 2023-2024 includes a call for ‘Innovative nature-inclusive concepts to reconcile offshore renewables with ocean protection’.
The Innovation Fund ‘Pilot Projects’ window had 2 points of uncertainty for the ocean energy sector. OEE has sought more information on both these questions. Below is the latest intelligence & guidance.
The new Innovation Fund call has a total budget of €3bn, with several dedicated ‘funding windows’. This briefing focuses exclusively on the €300m ‘Pilot Projects’ window.
The Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP) is a new framework for ERA-NETs that allow for Member States and the European Commission to put up joint calls.
The CETP covers power production technologies, heating & cooling, storage and energy efficiency, divided into pillars, ‘Transition Initiatives’ (TRIs). Ocean energy is part of TRI2: Enhanced zero emission power technologies.
